The Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route

The Wolds are a haven for cycling trails with quiet country roads, beautiful unspoilt views lots of quaint villages and historic sites to visit along the way.

This national cycling route is a total of 146 miles long, taking in rolling hills of the wolds and the stunning Yorkshire coastline. See some of the most impressive landmarks and famous visitor spots the region has to offer while cycling this challenging trail. Our guide covers the northern end of the route.

Start: Bridlington
Start your cycling journey in the popular seaside town of Bridlington. Enjoy some fish and chips and then head south along the sweeping promenades to reach Sewerby. Opt to visit the wonderful Sewerby Hall and Gardens en route or continue towards Bempton village.

Stop: Bempton & Flamborough
Home to RSPB Bempton Cliffs, here you can stop off and visit the reserve which is home to hundreds of puffins. You can find the seabirds nesting along the stunning cliffs throughout the year.

Flamborough Head, the rugged headland further east, also offers some stunning views from its lighthouse - the perfect place for a little stop off and picnic.

Continue on your route north to the village of Buckton via some peaceful and winding country roads with sprawling views. From here you can continue along the gentle roads north to Filey. Stop over at Crows Nest for the night and enjoy the stunning sea views from our camping field, or hire a caravan for some extra comfort.

Stop: Filey
Opt to explore the nearby town of Filey with its choice of cafes, local shops and restaurants and award-winning sandy beach. The town also has a handful of picturesque and locally-tended gardens including Crescent Gardens along the cliff top and Glen Gardens with its boating lake and children's play areas.

After exploring Filey, get back on the road and head to the nearby village of Hunmanby. From here, we're heading into the centre of the Wolds - prepare for sprawling countryside views, lavender fields and stunning woodlands.

Stop: Sledmere
Take the quiet country roads through the quait villages of Foxholes and Weatherthorpe, and then south to Sledmere. This beautiful village is home to Sledmere House & Walled Garden. A Grade I listed building, the house is beautifully preserved and the gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Have lunch at their Coach House Cafe before heading back out on the road.

From Sledmere, head north-west towards Malton. The quiet roads will take you through another handful of small villages before reaching Norton and Malton. Opt to stop en-route at the English Heritage site of Wharram Percy, a deserted medieval village, for an interesting bit of local history.

End: Malton
Finish your cycling tour in the market town of Malton, known as the 'Food Capital of Yorkshire' because of its huge choice of local bakers, butchers and produce. Head to market square and choose a local spot for dinner, then head west to peaceful Robin Hood Caravan Park for a stopover in one our holiday homes to end your trip.
