May Day Weekend - Slingsby

Slingsby is a village full of great traditions.

One of those traditions, going back many, many years is the May Day Festivities on Bank Holiday Monday (2.5.16) and this year is no different with festivities from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the village green. It is a traditional festival of music and dancing, with stalls, cakes, snacks, soup and teas, a children’s corner and a picnic area. Music will be provided by Swinton Brass Band and Malton School Jazz Band. Children (including one of our own) from Slingsby School will be dancing round the maypole along with other performances from the Acorn Dancers and the Minster Stray dancers. There isn’t an entrance fee for this afternoon of entertainment but donations are welcome to ensure the longevity of the event for generations to come.

And if that’s not enough entertainment for you, there are over 30 scarecrows popping up all over the village in another traditional event that raises money for the Friends of Slingsby School. Starting from 12 noon on Saturday, 30th April you are invited to buy a trail (£2) from reception and follow the clues around the village. At the end of the trail, you are asked to vote for your favourite scarecrow and help decide which villager gets the coveted “Best Scarecrow Award”.
