First Time Camping UK Guide | Tips for Beginners

New to camping? Discover everything you need to know for your first camping trip in the UK. Simple tips, packing lists and advice for a stress-free stay.

Camping is one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors, but if it’s your first time it can feel a bit daunting.

The good news is with a little preparation, your first camping trip can be easy, relaxing, and something you’ll want to do again and again.

If you're planning your stay at our parks, this guide will help you arrive confident and ready.

What to Pack

Packing is where most first-time campers overthink things. Keep it simple:

The Essentials:

  • Tent (with poles - one of the most frequently forgotten things!)
  • Pegs and mallet
  • Airbeds and sleeping bags
  • Torch or headlamp
  • Camping chairs

Nice to have:

  • Portable stove or BBQ
  • Cool box
  • Power bank
  • Extra blankets (UK weather!)
  • Windbreak

Top tip: Set your tent up at home once before your trip to check for any issues, missing parts or rips.

Choosing the Right Pitch

Not all pitches are the same, and choosing the right one for you makes a big difference.

  • Non-electric grass pitches
  • Electric hook-up grass pitches (tents only)
  • Super Pitches (for campervans, motorhomes and touring caravans)

If you’re unsure, always choose a simple grass camping pitch for your first stay. Electric hook-up is nice to have but not a necessity - phones and similar devices can be charged in our toilet blocks.

Be Prepared for British Weather

Let’s be honest, you can expect just about anything with UK weather.

  • Bring waterproofs (even in summer)
  • Pack layers rather than bulky clothing
  • Pack windbreaks and strong pegs for windy weather (our cliff top pitches are exposed)
  • Don’t forget sun cream

A little rain doesn’t have to ruin a trip! Visit our Rainy Day blog for ideas on what to do during wet weather.

Food & Cooking Made Easy

You don’t need to cook anything complicated.

Simple camping meals:

  • Bacon sandwiches in the morning
  • Pasta or noodles for tea
  • BBQ classics like burgers and sausages

Or keep it even easier - explore local takeaways and cafes nearby. Visit our Dining Out section for inspiration.
