If you are lucky, your journey to the Yorkshire coast will take you through the beautiful and unspoilt countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds.
The Yorkshire Wolds is a stretch of picturesque rolling hills and valleys, south of the North York Moors and stretching from the charming market town of Beverley to the town of Hessle on the banks of the River Humber.
The magnificent scenery, beautiful market towns, outstanding country houses and sweeping coastline ensure that many visitors return year after year. The area has many picturesque villages, with intriguing names enough to arise your curiosity. Call in at Wetwang, Fridaythorpe or Spittal and decide for yourself whether the place fits the name.
A gentle drive through the Yorkshire Wolds will lead you to Pocklington, an attractive market town which comes to life on a Tuesday – Market Day. The capital of the Yorkshire Wolds is Driffield, brimming with atmosphere.
The colourful market town of Beverley is rich in heritage, with many beautiful Georgian buildings, and the magnificent medieval Minster. The 15th century North Gate is all that remains of the towns 5 medieval gates. The town has 1,000 acres of parkland within easy walking distance of the centre and is surrounded by rolling green countryside, while a great day out can be had at Beverley Racecourse.
The Yorkshire Wolds also boasts plenty of character full inns, fine churches and fabulous country houses. Take a step back in town and experience the grand lifestyle of wealthy land owners with a visit to Burton Agnes and Burton Constable – two outstanding country houses and Sledmere House and Sewerby Hall.
The 79-mile Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail attracts thousands of visitors every year, due to the sheer natural beauty of the scenery and the opportunity to explore some lesser-known parts of Yorkshire.
The area also boasts some awe-inspiring natural wonders including Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve with its white cliffs and charming puffins, and the wildlife paradise of Danes Dyke.
